Each April, our country honors the strength, courage, and resiliency of our military children by celebrating Month of the Military Child. With so many moms and dads away from their families protecting our freedoms, this month of awareness is one small way Americans can acknowledge the important role military children play in the Armed Forces community.

Established in 1986 by Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger, this special month underscores the personal sacrifice of approximately 2 million military children, ranging in ages from newborn to 18 years. USBA salutes each one of you!

In the last 28 years, military installations, organizations, and communities have created special events paying tribute to these junior military heroes. To help you celebrate Month of the Military Child, you can locate events and planned activities in your area using the “state search” at Operation Military Kids.

If you don’t find things going on in your immediate area, don’t worry. The solution is simple. Pick a date and have your son, daughter, or grandchild choose how he or she wants to spend the day. Regardless of how you fill the hours, make sure each child understands the day is meant to honor and celebrate him or her—the military child.

You’re also encouraged to visit our USBA Facebook page and post a favorite memory of sharing military life with your child or children. Or share a personal tip for helping military kids acclimate after moving to a new base. We would love to hear from you.
