A study by the RAND Corporation shows there are over 5.5 million military and veteran caregivers in the United States. You may be one of these spouses, parents or other loved ones dedicating your life to caring for someone who bravely served the rest of us in the U.S. military.
For you and other caregivers, finding resources and the support you need can be overwhelming. If you or someone you know is caring for a veteran who served in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Guard or Reserves and is in need of support, check out the resources at HiddenHeroes.org.
Hidden Heroes (HH) is a not-for-profit founded by former Senator Elizabeth Dole after her World War II veteran husband, Robert Dole, was admitted to Walter Reed Army Medical Center for an extended stay in 2011. She saw firsthand the critical need for military caregiver support. To get the word out, she enlisted the help of several well-known advocates for veterans including newscasters Tom Brokaw and Matt Lauer, and actors Ryan Phillippe and Tom Hanks. As HH Campaign Chair Hanks says, “Military caregivers rarely ask for help, but they deserve our support.”
As part of its mission, HH provides a national registry to identify and connect military caregivers with each other and needed services. Currently, you can search a directory of over 225 programs and resources. To save time, searches can be filtered by location, type of assistance needed, type of wound, era of service, military branch, as well as legal and financial issues and more. Most programs are free.
Caregiving isn’t a mission you should face alone. Find help here.
Reminder: Nobody knows better than military families how life can change without warning. Because of the important role a military spouse plays in the lives of others, USBA offers affordable life insurance protection for qualifying military spouses. A USBA member’s lawful spouse, age 54 and under, may obtain group life insurance coverage as an Associate Member.
