At the Uniformed Services Benefit Association® (USBA®), we know that life insurance is more than just a policy—it’s a promise. A promise that, during one of life’s hardest moments, your loved ones will have the financial support they need to move forward. The tax-exempt death benefit from a life insurance policy can help ease both emotional and financial burdens, offering families the flexibility to use the funds where they’re needed most.
Back in 1959, USBA was founded with a mission to serve military families because we saw a need that wasn’t being met. At the time, many life insurance policies included a “war clause” that could limit coverage for service members. We believed that wasn’t right, so we helped eliminate that clause, ensuring military personnel weren’t unfairly excluded from the protection they deserved.
Over 65 Years of Dedicated Support
For over 65 years, we’ve remained committed to making life insurance more accessible, compassionate, and responsive for military families. One way we do that is by processing claims in partnership with our underwriter, New York Life Insurance Company, so our Members benefit from personalized service and industry-leading experience.
Just as important, USBA never charges Membership fees or annual dues. That’s part of our nonprofit promise: to put military families first, not profits.
What to Expect During the Claims Process
We understand that losing a loved one is never easy, and when that time comes, the claims process shouldn’t add more stress. That’s why we’ve designed ours to be as clear and simple as possible.
- Reporting a Claim
The process typically begins with a phone call to USBA. A family member informs us of the insured’s passing, and our team gathers important information, such as the date and cause of death and the beneficiary’s contact details. Based on the situation, we’ll let you know which documents are needed to move forward.
- Death Benefit Requirements
Once we’ve opened a claim, we’ll send a packet with a claim form and detailed instructions to the beneficiary. This form includes fields for personal details—like date of birth and Social Security number—and must be completed before we can process the request. In some cases, additional documentation may be needed, such as proof of children or the “Death of an American Citizen Abroad” form.
After receiving the completed form and any required documents, USBA forwards everything to New York Life for review and payment. In most cases, beneficiaries receive the death benefit in just a few days. Claims that are submitted in good order are typically processed within five business days.
Standing by You When It Matters Most
Losing a loved one is a deeply personal and difficult experience. At USBA, we’re committed to reducing the burden where we can—by offering a claims process that’s fast, respectful, and centered around your needs.
It’s part of how we continue to serve the military community with care, reliability, and compassion. If you ever need help filing a claim or have questions about your USBA policy, we’re here. Just give us a call or reach out online. We’re ready to support you, just as you’ve supported our country.
